 The concept for Premium Star began in 1975. It was a direct result of Herman Hoffman's research with breeding and feed formulation for beef, dairy cattle, and horses. Herman is a graduate of Purdue University with a major in Farm Business Management and minors in Economics and Animal Science.
Herman has since built his company around producing high fat feed that uses the highest quality ingredients available. He is also dedicated to preserving the Poco Tivio, King Fritz, Poco Bueno, and King line of quarter horses in addition to producing award-winning Black Angus Cattle. Premium Star has developed excellent quality feeds for horses, cattle, and dogs. We use only our own food for our livestock, and we have superior horses and cattle for sale and for breeding as a result. Premium Star first began developing quality high fat horse feed in 1990. The feed is carefully formulated from the finest ingredients available in the South Central Texas area. Because of this area's high humidity, extreme heat, and sandy soil many other types of feed are expensive and difficult to maintain. For example, alfalfa hay is very expensive here, and sand can also cause problems by contaminating feed. Oats and corn, although more readily available and less expensive also cause health problems such as gas, colic and founder. Our feed stores well, and does not deteriorate or spoil rapidly. Premium Star feed fed free choice with local quality grasses and hay will provide your horses with a healthy and balanced diet to reduce the occurrence of sand colic, gas colic, and impaction. Premium Star feed is a clean feed product without molasses, or corn and oats. Cereal grains produce gas when broken down during livestock digestive processes. This may cause severe cases of gas colic. Molasses, even though the animals love it, is also to be avoided as the sugar in it can cause health problems in animals with low or high blood sugar.
